Are keloids more common in certain groups of people?

Basically what happens differently in the regeneration of epithelial tissue to form either a

keloid or a scar?

Are keloids more common in certain groups of people?
Yes.

In those of African descent and some Northern Europeans, Keloids are more common. In the formation of keloid scar, the scar tissue does not stop once the wound in filled. The scar tissue (fibroblasts) grow up and out of the wound resulting in a raised scar.

Those of Asian descent can also develop abnormal scarring. Fortunately affected Asians more commonly exhibit hypertrophic scarring in which the fibroblast proliferation is not so marked. There is not so much growth out of the wound in hypertrophic scarring and these scars tend to respond more favorably to treatment (as opposed to keloids).
