What herbal medication is good for keloids or black spots on the skin?

None. True keloids consist of scar tissue. You'll need to see a dermatologist to have them removed. Any herbalist who tells you otherwise is interested in curing your fat wallet, not your physical or emotional wellbeing.

Does garlic helps remove scars or keloids??If not, wats d most effective way of removing them?aside frm surgery
No, garlic will not do anything for scarring -- keloidal or any other kind. People on here will likely tell you that Vitamin E will work, but this is an old wives' tale. All Vitamin E will get you is contact dermatitis (which is not something you want). It would be nice if something like that were effective, but it isn't. And I have read actual scientific skin-care research studies about this.

The only actually scientifically proven remedy for scars (especially keloidal scars) is silicone sheets. You do have to wear them for hours a day, and sometimes for weeks before you can actually see a difference, and you do have to clean the sheet after every use, but it's the only remedy with research to back it up. So they're good, but not a miracle.

There are many brands, and any should work. Prices depend on the size of the sheet. Some examples are ReJuveness ($39.50 to $90), Syprex ($20 to $40), and Curad Scar Therapy Pads ($16.99).

Be aware also, though, that the scar may naturally fade a great deal with time on its own. Some of my scars have become nearly invisible after a few years.

My tattoo is showing some infection/keloids in the red color area.?

The especialist administered some cream and steroids injection in the red colored area. At first, it disappeared but after 2 months it grow again. this has been going on for a year now. Can somebody tell me what to do?

My tattoo is showing some infection/keloids in the red color area.?
Take warm water with salt and clean the effected area 3 times a day! That's what my tattoo artist said. If it does not help I think you should go to the Doctor cause infection is not something to be played with...

Hope it helps!!
Reply:Keloids are an overgrowth of scar tissue at the site of a healed skin injury. Alternative Names for it are: Hypertrophic scar; Keloid scar; Scar - hypertrophic

Causes, incidence, and risk factors are:

Keloids occur from such skin injuries as surgical incisions, traumatic wounds, vaccination sites, burns, chickenpox , acne , tatooo, or even minor scratches. They are fairly common in young women and African Americans. Keloidosis is a term used when multiple or repeated keloids are produced.

Most keloids will flatten and become less noticeable over a period of several years. They may become irritated from rubbing on clothing or other forms of friction. Extensive keloids may become binding, limiting mobility. They may cause cosmetic changes and affect the appearance.

Exposure to the sun during the first year of the keloid's formation will cause the keloid to tan darker than surrounding skin. This dark coloration may become permanent.

Treatment:

Keloids often require no treatment. Keloids may be reduced in size by freezing ( cryotherapy ), external pressure, corticosteroid injections, laser treatments, radiation, or surgical removal. It is not unusual for keloids to reappear (sometimes larger than before) after they have been removed.

Discoloration from sun exposure can be prevented by covering the forming keloid with a patch or bandaid, and by using sunblockers when spending time in the sun. These extras protection measures should be continued for at least 6 months after injury or surgery for an adult, up to 18 months for a child.

Expectations (prognosis):

Keloids usually are not medically dangerous, but they may affect the cosmetic appearance. In some cases, they may spontaneously reduce in size over time. Removal or reduction may not be permanent, and surgical removal may result in a larger keloid scar.

Complications:

Psychological distress if keloid is large or disfiguring

Recurrence of keloid

Discomfort, tenderness, irritation of the keloid

FDA considers the inks used in intradermal tattoos, including permanent makeup, to be cosmetics and considers the pigments used in the inks to be color additives requiring premarket approval under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. However, because of other public health priorities and a previous lack of evidence of safety concerns, FDA has not traditionally regulated tattoo inks or the pigments used in them. The actual practice of tattooing is regulated by local jurisdictions. FDA is aware of more than 150 reports of adverse reactions in consumers to certain permanent make-up ink shades, and it is possible that the actual number of women affected was greater. In addition, concerns raised by the scientific community regarding the pigments used in these inks have prompted FDA to investigate the safe use of tattoo inks. FDA continues to evaluate the extent and severity of adverse events associated with tattooing and is conducting research on inks. As new information is assessed, the agency will consider whether additional actions are necessary to protect public health.

In addition to the reported adverse reactions, areas of concern include tattoo removal, infections that result from tattooing, and the increasing variety of pigments and diluents being used in tattooing. More than fifty different pigments and shades are in use, and the list continues to grow. Although a number of color additives are approved for use in cosmetics, none is approved for injection into the skin. Using an unapproved color additive in a tattoo ink makes the ink adulterated. Many pigments used in tattoo inks are not approved for skin contact at all. Some are industrial grade colors that are suitable for printers' ink or automobile paint.

Nevertheless, many individuals choose to undergo tattooing in its various forms. For some, it is an aesthetic choice or an initiation rite. Some choose permanent makeup as a time saver or because they have physical difficulty applying regular, temporary makeup. For others, tattooing is an adjunct to reconstructive surgery, particularly of the face or breast, to simulate natural pigmentation. People who have lost their eyebrows due to alopecia (a form of hair loss) may choose to have "eyebrows" tattooed on, while people with vitiligo (a lack of pigmentation in areas of the skin) may try tattooing to help camouflage the condition.

Whatever their reason, consumers should be aware of the risks involved in order to make an informed decision.

Reporting Adverse Reactions

FDA urges consumers and healthcare providers to report adverse reactions to tattoos and permanent makeup, problems with removal, or adverse reactions to temporary tattoos. Consumers and healthcare providers can register complaints by contacting their FDA district office (see the blue pages of your local phone directory) or by contacting FDA's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) Adverse Events Reporting System (CAERS) by phone at (301) 436-2405 or by email at CAERS@cfsan.fda.gov.

What is the cause for keloids/skin tags?

I have noticed as i get older i have more of them. Is there a direct cause for them and what can be done to stop them *aside from having them lanced*. My grandmother has them primarily on her face and that is where mine have developed as well as neck area.

What is the cause for keloids/skin tags?
Skin tags are a usually benign skin growth that most of the time shows up around middle age. You can have them treated by freezing them with liquid nitrogen instead of getting them lanced. You can go to the doctor for this or get a freezing wart remover and follow the directions.
Reply:i am not sure about this 100% but i think skin tags are just like moles but its skin and they can easily be removed just visit the doc my mom had hers removed a couple of months ago and only one left a scar and she had like 6 removed

How can i have my keloids at my back to dissapear a.s.a.p. it looks ugly and i cant wear sexy outfit.?

i odnt think those scar creams will help much..i had a real nasty huge one on my neck and my docter cut it off and sewed it tight and it didn't re-keloid it healed in a barely noticable scar..however there is a risk of it keloiding worse

How can i have my keloids at my back to dissapear a.s.a.p. it looks ugly and i cant wear sexy outfit.?
Most of the time people who get keloids are prone to them and the repair will scar in the same way.
Reply:I'm afraid at the moment there is no real cure - I had one on my arm cut off and it grew back to the identical scar!

Sometimes if they are in a good spot like a leg or lower arm you can try a silicone gel patch with a pressure bandage holding it one - needs to be there for a few months and it can flatten it out. Your back isn't a great place to try this on unfortunately.

Sometimes they fade.

I have one right on my cleavage which is really frustrating as I have to wear high necklines. (I'd take your back one anyday!) I also have an old one on my arm - which I don't worry about so much.

I suggest you just wear what you want and be confident - it won't look as bad to other people as it does to you. And they are pretty unusual so you can tell people it's where you were bitten by a tiger or something!!

Does anyone know anything about keloids?

It started out really small, but over the years it's gotten quite a bit bigger. It's now about 2 1/2 inches wide. I wouldn't really care, except it's on the part of my chest that's visible if I wear even a modest scoop-neck top.

I know that surgery to remove them doesn't usually work as they come back worse than before. I've tried covering it with stuff like Dermablend, I've tried collagen shots, (they hurt like a mo-fo!!) I've tried silicone compression bandages -

Is there anything else out there that helps? I hate this thing!

Does anyone know anything about keloids?
yeah, my e had a lot of keloids removed from her ears last summer because she pierced her ears herself all up and down them. she did have collagen shots on the spots after they were removed. it did go rather well, and she hasn't had a problem so far, but they weren't as big as yours. the tattoo idea sounds good, but i think a bear with "sugaree" under it would be a lot cooler.
Reply:how about a nice tattoo around it? i suggest a ring of deady bears dancing or the ever popular rose,, but that would only be appropriate over your left breast. And it should have a scroll style banner under it that says "spider", or property of spider if he's the jealous type.

I get kenalog injections for keloids, is there another permanent treatment or cure?
Adelle Davis in Let's Get Well recommends vitamin E 400 iu twice a day, and Vitamin E oil applied daily.

MSM cream can also be tried, and 2-4 grams a day in divided doses taken.

No guarantees, but it has helped some folks.

Good luck!
Reply:kenalog is not permanent or you would only need to complete the injection or the series of injections. best to see a dermatologist.

What is the effects of keloids?

keloids are biologically "active"scars that itch sometimes because they never really healed.

How to get rid of keloids?

A surgeon can remove it, and also you can get them injected with steroids to get them smaller.

How to get rid of keloids?
Only way is by surgical means.
Reply:A Keloid is a raised, hard, irregular shaped, itchy scar on the skin due to a defective healing process in which too much Collagen is produced.

This normally occurs after a skin injury and can develop anywhere on the body, however the breastbone and shoulder are particularly common sites.

After several months most Keloids flatten and cease to itch. However, if symptoms persist injection of Corticosteroids into the Keloid may reduce itchiness and cause some shrinkage.

Have any of you had keloids by where you got your ear pierced?

If so, did you have any luck getting rid of it, and ever getting your ears pierced again.

Have any of you had keloids by where you got your ear pierced?
A keloid is nothing more than an extra large scar. Keloids tend to occur mainly in people of African heritage. They are not dangerous and are mainly a cosmetic problem. A good plastic surgeon can excise them with good cosmetic effect. However, once a person is known to develop keloids there is a risk that they will develop other keloids at the site of any skin scar, including a surgical incision. Careful repiercing by a medical professional may avoid regrowth of other keloids.
Reply:No, i have not.
Reply:I don't have any piercing. But I think that if you produce keloids, like me, is better that you avoid to make you a piercing o tatoo on your body because always there is a risk, a keloid can be produced for a simple spot.
Reply:My ears are currently at a 0 and when I first got them to an 8 the right one formed a keloid. It took a long time to go away because I popped it. Yeah they suck so keep clean and you should have no problems.

it really boder's a lot to me .. i can't wear sleveless coz im shy to show this ...

thank!!!

Is there a way that keloids can remove?
Have your doctor look at it--it's not really keloid but when you were immunized and I have mine on my leg, it left a funny type of scarring--see if your doc sees anything wrong with it and if laser done by a plastic surgeon would relieve your symptoms and help how it looks---also ask for an estimate of what it costs- I don't think insurance will cover unless there is a physical reason to have it fixed.
Reply:ethnicity's of darker skin have more pigmentation (obviously) and also prone to having keloids. Keloids are where when you are cut, the scar tissue grows to close the wound. When the scar tissue doesn't stop growing it forms a mass that is a keloid. You can get them removed. But, there is a very likely chance that it will come back, due to the fact that you have to CUT them off causing the need for scar tissue to grow. No one can say how fast or how big it will get.

My daughter has a keloid scar. We tried lots of things, including steyroid injections and nothing worked. Just made it worse. The scar keeps healing itself everytime you try to fix it. Just let it be. You could make it worse. My daughters was the size of a large pimple, after the "medicine" its now about an inch and a half long and 1/2 inch wide.

Is there any new medical, not homeopathic, solutions to removing or reducing Keloids?

my wife suffers from a Keloid that appeared on her chest 17 years ago. she has had it removed twice, the last time 10 years ago. each time she has taken local radiation to stop the regrowth.

Is there any new medical, not homeopathic, solutions to removing or reducing Keloids?
Keloids often require no treatment. Keloids may be reduced in size by freezing (cryotherapy), external pressure, corticosteroid injections, laser treatments, radiation, or surgical removal. It is not unusual for keloids to reappear (sometimes larger than before) after they have been removed. The doctor I used to work for used cryotherapy to reduce them and then surgical removal.

The oil that naturally comes from skin is disrupted in a scar or keloids. So it dries out and itches.

Can needle peircings cause keloids?

peircings can and do cause keloids in those prone to keloids.

Can needle peircings cause keloids?
yes, on certain people
Reply:Yes. Anything that becomes infected or is often irritated will cause scarring. I believe the amount of melanin your skin produces will determine if your skin will keloid. Im not really sure about the melanin. I've seen alot of lip piercings that keloid and it is not pretty. Good luck!!!

Any home remedy for keloids. i have big kiloid on my arm already 4 yrs now?

There is no satisfactory treatment for keloids.

Some doctors have had success injecting keloids with bleomycin an anticancer drug.

The best treatment is to inject a long-acting cortisone into the keloid once a month. After several injections with cortisone, the keloid usually becomes less noticeable and flattens in three to six months time.

A new treatment for keloids is to apply a silicone gel preparation over the keloid scar for 12-24 hours each day. This treatment is started three to four weeks after the wound or injury. The gel preparation should be covered with an ace bandage, cloth wrap, or tape and changed every 7-10 days based upon need. Silicone gel is available from your doctor. The gel can be washed and used over each day. With daily use, the keloid will become flatter and smoother within two to twelve months. I do not know how this treatment works.

How do I get Keloids off my skin or at least make it better looking?

Suggest seeing a surgeon who performs various types of laser surgury. Laser can work miracles on treating and removing various types of skin imperfections and marks/bumps/veins/ etc. Expensive however!

If you have Keloids of the auricle from cartilage piercings is there anyway to treat it at home?

there really is nothing you can do for them its just scar tissue that makes a bump.

If the bump is big enough to rub on things then a Dr may be able to remove some of it.

After awhile they stop being a bother. It took about 6 months for mine to be "ignorable" they are on the inside curve of my ear.

Im having unwanted keloids on my chest due to insect bites, what would i do to prevent them and to cure them?
I just went though a new procedure to remove a keloid on my chest (which I had and hated for 7 years).

THe process is relatively new and has to be done by a plastic surgeon. They remove the keloid sugically. To prevent the high percent chance of it coming back, the put in synthetic skin called "Integra" and then over that do a skin graft (in my case from my leg).

Since the chest is a particularly active area, they will have you wear a medipack(vacum device) for 7-10 days until everything takes.

Overall I'm glad I did it although it wasn't without some real discomfort.

It will take months before my chest skin graft is faded.

Talk to some plastic surgeons.

(by the way mine was covered by insurance :))

Can you get keloids from wearing earrings?

I have one on my leg from a cut some people say I can get one on my ear

Can you get keloids from wearing earrings?
I developed a keloid on each ear after I got my ears pierced. The doctor gave me a shot of cortisone in each ear, and they went away. However, he told me that people that form these tend to form them other places also. And he said I could no longer wear pierced earrings as the keloids would return and get larger. So yes, it is possible to develop keloids from wearing earrings, especially since you got one on your leg. (I got one on my tongue that had to be lasered off when I accidentally bit my tongue one time!)
Reply:Yes.
Reply:people prone to developing keloids can and do develop them from pierced ears, and on rare occasions even from clip earrings. It is the constant irritation that causes the formation of keloids.
Reply:you can get keloids anwhere you have scar tissue forming if you are prone to this condition.
Reply:i think when you get your ears peirced
Reply:Yes, you can get keloids on your ear from a piercing--they are actually fairly common.

If your piercing is fully healed, and you have had no problems, there is less of a chance of developing one. However, part of it depends on the type of earrings you wear. You should always avoid really heavy earrings, not simply to avoid keloids, but because they stretch the piercing and it can become very disfigured. I am prone to keloids because I have darker skin, but I have five ear piercings and one facial piercing, and I have no keloids at any of those sites.

Simply watch your ears closely. If you start developing a keloid, take your earrings out and go see a dermatologist. That's really all you can do, other than leaving the holes alone and wearing clip on earrings when you want to wear earrings (and technically, those can cause keloids as well, since they can be caused by friction).

Best of luck!

Any one have keloids? What are they and what can you do about them.?

Keloids are overproduction of keratin which is a part of scar formation. As you continue to bring trauma to the area like pricking or scratching, it will continue to grow bigger so avoid bringing trauma to it. You can have it injected with steriods to somehow improve its looks and look for as pulsed dye laser..it will really help in making it smaller. Go to your dermatologist for this. God bless!

If your skin keloids can you have plastic surgery? What about get a tattoo?
I am a keloid former and my dermatologist said that the scars from plastic surgery may heal in a less than attractive way - and he said I can't even get my ears pierced. I've had many surgeries and my scars are very pronounced and ugly (they are on my abdomen). I am unwilling, myself, to have plastic surgery and end up with and ugly stripe on my face. Not sure about a tattoo - since it is just on the surface of skin and doesn't cut through the layers.

This actually came up in an epi of Miami Ink. Ami ended up doing the tat, but he did have major concerns about it:

Miami Ink Summary - August 2, 2006 Episode

Amanda is getting married soon and wants to cover some keloid scars on her upper back and shoulders from a severe case of chicken pox. Ami is concerned that the tattoo could cause additional keloiding, and designs the tattoo around – but not on – her scars. She brought in her own design of a tribal-style wing, but Ami draws a much more artistic version of it, which she loves. Ami tells her she really shouldn’t be ashamed of her scars, because they build and add character. But Amanda was teased so much as a child because of them that she just can’t seem to accept them, and gets a huge boost of confidence when she sees the tattoo.
Reply:Yes, tattoos can be placed over scars.

Foremost, how old are your scars? Most reputable artists won't tattoo over scar tissue until the scar is at least 3 years old. This allows time for the scar to change and stretch.

No, tattooing over a scar was less painful for me, than tattooing on healthy normal skin.

I will warn you, whenever a tattoo is placed over a scar, there is always the chance of distortion with time, and the scar not taking the ink as well as the surrounding skin. You need to talk to an artist and let him/her decide what is best for you.

And yes, tattoos hurt, but, that's all part of the game.

I have 4 large scars on my back that are holding up the completion of my back piece. Only 2 years and 11 months and I might get to get them covered!

Good luck!
Reply:no...that's not good....just remove the scar first before putting a tatoo..there are a lot of scar removing methods out there...
Reply:First make certain that it is actually a keloid and not a wide or hypertrophic scar. If it is a true keloid then the last thing you want is a tatoo because that can for another, possibly worse keloid. If it is only wide or hypertrophic then there a number of options to consider including revision surgery, steroid injections, silicone gel treatment, laser. Tatooing it can work but you should get a plastic surgeron to look at it first.
Reply:Listen to the first guy, SkinDeep, knows what hes talking about. I have tattooed over scares without a problem, no worries.

If someone who keloids when they get their earpierced and got them removed will the same thing happen if?

If someone who keloids when they get their earpierced and got them removed will the same thing happen if?
Yes it's very possible. The scar tissue will keep over lapping. Especially if it's in the same place as one appeared before. If I were you I would honestly avoid the ear piercing, and talk to your doctor and a tattoo artist about getting a tattoo. At the tattoo shops they will be very hesitant if you are prone to an allergic reaction or anything of the kind. But talk to your doctor so he/she can give you all the facts.
Reply:I was going to take you seriously... but wanting to get a tattoo is just plain stupid.. so you are on your own.
Reply:Uhh No, you're not going to get a keloid from a tattoo.

Reply:I don't think so. Then again, I am no expert...I get keloids too though (when I get my cartilage pierced). I hate it!
Reply:It is possible...In which area of the body are keloids most likely to appear?

Keloids develop most often on the chest, back, shoulders, and earlobes. They rarely develop on the face (with the exception of the jawline).

Keloids and piercing

Keloids can develop following the minor injuries that occur with body piercing. Since doctors do not understand the precise reasons why some people are more prone to develop keloids, it is impossible to predict whether piercing will lead to keloid formation. Although there are some families which seem prone to form keloids, for the most part, it's impossible to tell who will develop a keloid. One person might, for instance, develop a keloid in one earlobe after piercing and not in the other. It makes sense, however, for someone who has formed one keloid to avoid any elective surgery or piercing, especially in body areas prone to scarring.

What exactly are keloids?

My friend's father has them, and I was wondering how you get them, what they are, and if there is any way to get rid of them, or if you are stuck with them for life. Thanks in advance!

What exactly are keloids?
Keloids are an overgrowth of scar tissue at the site of a healed skin injury.

Keloids occur from such skin injuries as surgical incisions, traumatic wounds, vaccination sites, burns, chickenpox, acne, or even minor scratches.

Keloids often require no treatment. Keloids may be reduced in size by freezing (cryotherapy), external pressure, corticosteroid injections, laser treatments, radiation, or surgical removal. It is not unusual for keloids to reappear (sometimes larger than before) after they have been removed.

Discoloration from sun exposure can be prevented by covering the forming keloid with a patch or bandaid, and by using sunblockers when spending time in the sun. These extras protection measures should be continued for at least 6 months after injury or surgery for an adult, up to 18 months for a child.
Reply:A red, raised formation of fibrous scar tissue caused by excessive tissue repair in response to trauma or surgical incisions. Keloids occur from such skin injuries as surgical incisions, traumatic wounds, vaccination sites, burns, chickenpox, acne, or even minor scratches. Keloids usually are not medically dangerous, but they may affect the cosmetic appearance. In some cases, they may spontaneously reduce in size over time. Removal or reduction may not be permanent, and surgical removal may result in a larger keloid scar. Call your health care provider if keloids develop and removal or reduction is desired, or new symptoms develop.

Best medicine for keloids?

One of the more common treatments for keloids is to inject corticosteroids directly into the scar itself. This is not a one time treatment, it has to be repeated several times usually over 4 week intervals. This will help in making the keloid soft and smaller and may relieve any associated pain or itching, however the keloid will never go away completely with this method.

Now the keloid can be surgically removed, the things is you are inducing trauma to the tissue and can almost gurantee the keloid will retun, so this has to be cmbined with another treatment. The site can be injected with steroids after the procedure, some success has been reported with using a cream called imiquimod after the surgery or localized radiation to the area.

Your doctor is always the best person to ask about someting like that.
Reply:Keloids are scar tissue, right? And there is not much you can do for them once they are there. Everyone heals or scars differently, some more than others. Your doctor can best advise - sometimes they can be surgically revised.

What's a natural way to improve the appearance of keloids?

I've tried corticosteroids and over the counter scar reducing medications, but nothing seems to improve the appearance of my keloid or reduce the itchyness. I've been told that shea butter can help. Can anyone substantiate that claim? Thanks.

A Keloid is scar tissue. Its however abnormal scar tissue. It does not stop. It continues to build over and above, within a mass of skin cells and repeats itself - and becomes very noticable and pretty much a huge humilation within the person who has it. It is usually brought on by a rupture or injury of the skin. Can be as simple as a deep pimple, scrape, cut, wound or even a ear piercing - To start it off.

The issue is not how it started -but what is. A keloid is non-forgiving. You can have it surgically removed and it its possiblity of growing back and becoming even worse - is more than probable. I want you to visit the site I listed.

I have a keloids on left back shoulder. Is it possible to have a tattoo where the scar place?

I really wanted to wear bareback tops. It is so embarassing when someone notice the scar! Is it gonna be hurt??? Im confuse, 'cause others told me that IT REALLY HURTS! but i really want a tattoo to cover the scar....(sigh,sniff!)

I have a keloids on left back shoulder. Is it possible to have a tattoo where the scar place?
It can be done, however tattoos done over scars like yours can look bad.

Most tattoos hurt, also depends on your pain tolerance level, and where it is.

You should try to see a dermatologist to reduce the scar before getting a tattoo over it, if you insist on getting one.

It isn't the best idea to get a tat over a scar like yours, most tat artists will not do it because it is hard for them to do for one, and two it effects the quality of the tattoo. Though it is possible, but find a qualified tattoo artist, someone with A LOT of experience with scars and what not.
Reply:tattoos should never ever be done over scar tissue. any tattoo artist that has any decency would not do work on scars. talk to a dermatologist about reducing your scar.
Reply:it is posible but the needles must go deeper and the tat might not look right due to the scar, depending on how bad the scar is depends on if the artist will even do it, it also hurts really bad i've had one done over a scar and it is reallly bad compared to the other 7 on normal skin, see a dr. first to see if there is an easier way, good luck

If I form keloids should I get a tattoo?

I think you shouldn't, because there's a chance that scar tissue might form at the tattoo site and ruin it. Anyway, you may want to consult a dermatologist regarding this question for further advise.

If I form keloids should I get a tattoo?
My husband is a keloid former and has 2 big tattoos. He hasn't had any problems.
Reply:Keloids are raised, reddish nodules that develop at the site of an injury. After a wound has occurred to the skin both skin cells and connective tissue cells (fibroblasts) begin multiplying to repair the damage. A scar is made up of 'connective tissue', gristle-like fibers deposited in the skin by the fibroblasts to hold the wound closed. With keloids, the fibroblasts continue to multiply even after the wound is filled in. Thus keloids project above the surface of the skin and form large mounds of scar tissue.

Keloids may form on any part of the body, although the upper chest, shoulders and upper back are especially prone to keloid formation. Symptoms include pigmentation of the skin, itchiness, redness, unusual sensations and pain.

It is estimated that keloids occur in about 10% of people. While most people never form keloids, others develop them after minor injuries, even insect bites or pimples. Darkly pigmented people seem to be more prone to forming keloids. Men and women are equally affected.

A hypertrophic scar looks similar to a keloid. Hypertrophic scars are more common. They don't get a big as keloids, and may fade with time. They occur in all racial groups. Keloids are considered a benign tumor, but they are mainly a cosmetic nuisance and never become malignant. Operating on a keloid usually stimulates more scar tissue to form, so people with keloids may have been told that there is nothing that can be done to get rid of them.

Keloids may be often be prevented by using a pressure dressing, silicone gel pad or paper tape over the injury site. These are left on for 23 of 24 hours each day. This treatment is after healing of the wound or injury, usually within a month. Once they have formed, there is no completely satisfactory treatment for keloids. Treatments include cryosurgery (freezing), excision, laser, x-rays, and steroid injections.

The best initial treatment is to inject long-acting cortisone (steroid) into the keloid once a month. After several injections with cortisone, the keloid usually becomes less noticeable and flattens in three to six month's time. Hypertrophic scars often respond completely, but keloids and are notoriously difficult to treat, with recurrences commonly seen. People who have a family history of keloids have a higher rate of recurrence after treatment.

Cryosurgery is an excellent treatment for keloids that are small and occur on lightly pigmented skin. It is often combined with monthly cortisone injections. Earlobe keloids are often surgically excised and followed with several steroid injections. In addition, a drug called alpha-interferon has been injected into the scar immediately after keloid removal with very promising results. Laser treatment is very good at improving skin texture and color, but doesn't always flatten out the keloid.

For severe cases, the keloid can surgically excised and given x-ray treatments to the site immediately afterwards, usually the on the same day. This works in about 85% of the most severe cases. Electron beam radiation can be used, which will not go deep enough to affect internal organs. Orthovoltage radiation is more penetrating and slightly more effective. There have not been any reports of this causing any form of cancer in many years of use, but it is very expensive. Silicone pads and creams are sold over the counter for use on keloids. These do benefit hypertrophic scars but will not cure a true keloid. However, they can reduce pain, swelling and itching from a keloid. They usually take 3 months or more to work.

I hope that you understand, from this article, that getting a tatoo is going to make the problem worse and unmanagable. Please do not do it. In the long run it will cost you a fortune and lots of visits to the Doctor and social isolation.

I have keloids in my ear from piercing them many times. would this affect getting my nose pierced ?

Our bodies naturally scar for surgeries, cuts and piercings which is actually the skin healing itself. Unfortunately, some people get keloids because their skin "over heals", causing large unattractive bubble like scars. I know that if you keloid once, there is a 50 % chance that you will keloid again. I have a link for you : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keloid. I hope it helps. :)

I have keloids in my ear from piercing them many times. would this affect getting my nose pierced ?
Maybe but maybe not. I have medium skin and the darker your are the more prone you are to keloids. I also had one every time I got my UPPER ear pierced but about 7 years ago I got my belly button done and it is fine. The lower lobes are fine too. I just gave up on the upper, harder cartilage or the ears. Good luck.

They're like benign growths of extra skin. I used to get tiny ones for a couple weeks after I got a new piercing. Apparently burn victims get them really badly. Google image search it.

What should i do to remove my keloids??????

Treatments

No treatment for keloids is considered to be 100% effective. Some of the treatments that are currently available are described below. These treatments have varying degrees of effectiveness. All the invasive methods of treatment like surgery carry a serious risk of the keloid recurring and becoming bigger than it previously was.

* Contractubex® Gel / Hexilak® Gel - These gels contain Allium cepa extract, Heparin and Allantoin. Developed for the treatment of post-thyroidectomy scars, these gels are now indicated for the treatment of all post traumatic (burns, acne, piercings) or post surgery scars and keloids. Treatment is simple but requires a lot of perseverance. Has shown exceptional results, especially in newer scars. The earlier the initiation of treatment, the better the prognosis. This is now the first line of approach in conservative treatment of keloids.[citation needed]

* Surgery — Surgery requires great care during and after the operation. Keloids that return after being excised may be larger than the original. There is a 50% chance of recurrence after surgical removal. However, keloids are less likely to return if surgical removal is combined with other treatments. Surgical or laser excision may be followed by intralesional injections of a corticosteroid. Plastic closure of the skin including techniques such as v-plasty or w-plasty to reduce skin tension are known to reduce recurrence of keloids following excision.

* Dressings — Moistened wound coverings made of silicone gel (such as Dermatix) or silastic have been shown in studies to reduce keloid prominence over time. This treatment is safe and painless, although some patients may experience increased itchiness from wearing the dressing for an extended period of time.

* Steroid injections — Steroid injections are best used as the scar begins to thicken or if the person is a known keloid former. A series of injections with triamcinolone acetonide or another corticosteroid may reduce keloid size and irritation. However, injections are often uncomfortable and in large and/or hard scars can be difficult to perform, requiring local anesthetic for people over 16, and full anesthetic for people under. The treatment area can become very painful as the anesthetic wears off.

* Compression — Compression bandages applied to the site over several months, sometimes for as long as six to twelve months, may lead to a reduction in the size of the keloid. This is the best treatment for preventing new scars.

* Cryosurgery — Cryosurgery is an excellent treatment for keloids which are small and occur on lightly pigmented skin. It is often combined with monthly cortisone injections. The use of cryotherapy is limited since it causes skin blanching. It freezes the skin and causes sludging of the circulation beneath, effectively creating an area of localized frostbite. There is a slough of skin and keloid with re-epithelization.

* Radiation therapy — Electron beam radiation can be used at levels which do not penetrate the body deeply enough to affect internal organs. Orthovoltage radiation is more penetrating and slightly more effective. Radiation treatments reduce scar formation if they are used soon after a surgery while the surgical wound is healing. This is one of the most effective procedures.[1]

* Laser therapy — This is an alternative to conventional surgery for keloid removal. Lasers produce a superficial peel but often do not reduce the bulk of the keloid. The use of dye-tuned lasers has not shown better results than that of cold lasers.

* Newer treatments — Drugs that are used to treat autoimmune diseases or cancer have shown promise. These include alpha-interferon, 5-fluorouracil and bleomycin. However, there is a need for further study and evaluation of this treatment technique.

* Also research in Aldara which is used to treat warts has had very good results with a 90% succes rate. Usually cutting out the keloid and applying Aldara to the area. Theres been studies of patients 9 out of 10 the keloids didnt grow back, and some 10 out of 10 didnt grow back.

What should i do to remove my keloids??????
Go to a dermatologist that specializes or is very familiar with black peoples skin. They will usually, depending on the size of the keloid, inject a steroid and give you some type of topical ointment. My daughter had large ones on the back of her ears from a piercing. All Gone. But be careful, keloids can come back - do not aggravate the skin, treat it very gently, and try not to do the same thing that caused them in the first place - if possible. Good Luck
Reply:Try getting a steroid shot from your dermatologist.

What is keloids??

Keloids occur from such skin injuries as surgical incisions, traumatic wounds, vaccination sites, burns, chickenpox , acne , or even minor scratches.

Reply:Keloid is just the name for an unusually enlarged or thickened scar. A normal scar is a cicatrix, keloid refers to an abnormal scar.

Some people are genetically disposed to form keloid from even minor injuries and others are not. Dark-skinned people are more likely to make keloid than most lighter skinned people.

Preventing keloid is a medical challenge when a person has an injury or needs surgery. Careful technique, infection control and sometimes drugs like steroids may help reduce scarring.

Keloid is the tissue that scars are made of.

What are the causes of getting keloids, particularly small sized keloids? Can it be stress induced?
Keliods are overgrowth of scar tissue. This is more common in the African and African-American communities. What would ordinarily be a simple scar the the average person will develop into a large growth for the affected individual. I do not believe that there is an environmental cause, I think that it is more genetic predisposition.
Reply:No- It is totally genetic and you cannot do anything except take systemic steroidal medications to stop it occurring (and this meds are not available to stop scarring).

It is more common in people with darker skin.

there are some treatments for them once theuy have occurred and while you are healing.

the most effective and well researched is wearing a piece of silicone sheet over the area for approx 6 months which reduces the lumpiness and red/angriness of the scar.

this is called cica care and it made by smith and nephew

other treatments which you will see advertised such as bio oil and vit E have little efficiency.
Reply:Keloids expand in claw like growths over normal skin. They have the capability to hurt with a needle-like pain or to itch without warning, although the degree of sensation varies from patient to patient.

If the keloid becomes infected, it may ulcerate. The only treatment is to remove the scar completely. However, the probability that the resulting surgery scar will also become a keloid is high, usually greater than 50%.

Keloids form within scar tissue. Collagen, used in wound repair, tends to overgrow in this area, sometimes producing a lump many times larger than that of the original scar. Although they usually occur at the site of an injury, keloids can also arise spontaneously. They can occur at the site of a piercing and even from something as simple as a pimple or scratch. They can occur as a result of severe acne or chickenpox scarring, infection at a wound site, repeated trauma to an area, excessive skin tension during wound closure or a foreign body in a wound. Keloids can sometimes be sensitive to chlorine (consult your dermatologist if faced with this problem).

They affect both sexes equally although the incidence in young female patients has been reported to be higher than in young males, probably reflecting the greater frequency of earlobe piercing among women. There is a fifteen times higher frequency of occurrence in highly pigmented people. It is speculated that people who possess any degree of African descent, regardless of skin color, may be especially susceptible to keloid occurrences.

I have had several keloids and have made them go away with simple Vitamin E capsules. I poked a hole in one of the gel caps, squeezed a little out on my finger and rubbed it into the keloid. One capsule lasts about a week so you only need a tiny bottle of Vitamin E capsules. All of my keloids are now flat to the skin and almost invisible. It took probably 6 months before it was gone but was well worth the effort to me and was cheap.

About Keloids?

How do you know when you are about to get one? What are the first signs?

About Keloids?
Keloids are usually the result of cuts and other trauma to the skin. Instead of a normal scab, a raised skin like scab is formed. Keloids are more prevalent in darker skin tones, There is no real way of knowing if you are going to develop keloids. A good clue though is genetics, if you have people in your family prone to keloid scarring you may be too.

How can keloids be best avoided or treated? What are the disadvantages of pateries?
Persons who tend to develop keloids should avoid cosmetic procedures to their skin. If surgery is necessary, an injection of cortisone can be made into the skin first. This may lower the risk of developing a keloid.

Unless it is extreme, astigmatism can be compensated for satisfactorily with eyeglasses or contact lenses.

I got keloids on my wrists and they looked like me commiting suicide. any help to reduce them?

Try mederma its a topical creme that should help fade scars. Unfortunately the keloid scars are much much harder to reduce because they start out so much larger. I have a similar keloid scar on my wrist and I just joke about it when people notice it.

On future cuts and such be sure to use something like neosporin to make them heal fast and never pick at the scabs. Thats the best way to try and prevent the new keloids from appearing.

Keloids are soft, raised scars. They occur more frequently in African Americans. They can become quite large and sometimes must be surgically removed if they interfere with normal functioning of a body part or are cosmetically unappealing. Keloids are generally painless.

Are keloids more common in certain groups of people?
A keloid is a special type of scar which results in an overgrowth of tissue at the site of a healed skin injury. Keloids are firm, rubbery lesions or shiny, fibrous nodules and can vary from pink to flesh-colored or red to dark brown in color. A keloid scar is benign, noncontagious and usually accompanied by severe itchiness, sharp pains and changes in texture. In severe cases, it can affect movement of skin. For most, keloids are a cosmetic problem. Keloids should not be confused with Hypertrophic scars, which are raised scars that do not grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound and may reduce over time.

[edit] History in medicine

Keloids were described by Egyptian surgeons around 1700 BC. Baron Jean-Louis Alibert (1768-1837) identified the keloid as an entity in 1806. He called them cancroide, later changing the name to cheloide to avoid confusion with cancer. The word is derived from the Greek chele, meaning crab's claw, and the suffix -oid, meaning like. For many years Alibert's clinic at the L'Hôpital Saint-Louis was the world’s center for dermatology.

[edit] Intentional keloids

The Olmec of Mexico in pre-Columbian times used keloid scarification as a means of decoration. In the modern era, women of the Nubia-Kush in Sudan are intentionally scarified with facial keloids as a means of decoration. The Nuer and Nuba use lip plugs, keloid tattoos along the forehead, keloid tattoos along the chin and above the lip, and cornrows. As a part of a ritual the people of Papua New Guinea cut their skin and insert clay or ash into the wounds so as to develop permanent bumps (known as keloids or weals). This painful ritual honors members of their tribe who are celebrated for their courage and endurance.

[edit] Locations of keloids

Keloids are mostly found on earlobes, the sternum, shoulders, the upper back and any place where abrasion has occurred. These are usually the result of pimples, insect bites, scratching, or any other skin trauma. Certain procedures are known to cause keloid formation such as within post-operative surgical scars or on earlobes following piercing and behind the ears after otoplasty.

[edit] Incidence

People of African or Asian descent are more likely to develop keloids.

It must be noted that there is no known cure for keloids that will cure the problem. There are a few companies that are working towards a more effective treatment, focusing on aspects such as Transforming Growth Factor inhibition.

* Natural treatments (in case of piercings) - Take a warm rag and hold it up against the keloid for about 5 minutes. This can also be done with a warm tea bag. Tea tree oil is also effective but is not recommended as it can allow bacteria to stick to it.

* 5FU - Combination of steriods and anticancer drugs. A plastic surgeon in NY performs this treatment http://www.constructivesurgery.com/keloi...

This is a young male with bilateral keloid formation on the plantar surfaces of both feet. He has never been treated for this condition. There are other much smaller keloids located at small inlets on the glabrous(hairless) skin.
Reply:They are fairly common in young women and African Americans. Keloids often run in families.
Reply:Koreans and Japanese are more prone to keloids. Of these women below thirty are most prone.

What successful natural remedies has anyone tried for keloids?

I have a keloid on my jawline and it isn't so much a problem with the way it looks but that it is slightly painful to the touch. I am hoping someone has had some luck with some natural remedies like different herbs or something of the sort. I don't want to do steroid injections, lasers, freezing, or any of those. Any help would be appreciated...

Take Care and God Bless !
Reply:I know five or six people who have been helped by Vitamin E. Buy the capsules, take them as directed. AND, three times a day, after washing your hands, use a sterilized needle to pierce a Vitamin E capsule. Squeeze out the liquid and apply it to your keloids. I hope this helps yours.

So keloids??

what is the best way to get rid of them?

So keloids??
You may wanna try using silicone gel (eg. Cica care) to help lighten and flatten the keloid. It takes time though...visible results may only be seen after 1 month of using it. Better results can be achieve if you start using it early (old keloids are more resistant). Hope that helps!
Reply:I was prescribed cream and then steriod injections. The injections helped but I need to get a couple more. They are a pain and I cannot wear cute tops because of them!
Reply:Surgical removal is an option, but you run the risk of replacing one keloid scar with another. Talk to your doctor about various options and determine which one is the best course of action.
Reply:Some people have had good luck using Vit. E directly applied to scars and keloids. Poke a hole in a Vit. E capsule - with a pin or needle - squeeze the Vit. E. oil onto the keloid. It can't hurt and, as I recall, one of my nieces used it on her keloids, years ago.

Also, since taking zinc works to reduce stretch marks, it may be worth trying for keloids. It's best to divide the zinc dosage so you get a balanced effect - such as, if you use 50 mg, take 25 mg in the morning and the evening. Very dry skin or scalp can reveal a zinc deficiency and zinc with increased Vit. C was suggested by my son's allergist. We found it helped tremendously in his case.

Heavy use of coffee and/or tobacco depletes the system of zinc. If this applies to you, or if you have dry skin, taking zinc may help.

As wierd as it sounds, friends of mine are using Prep. H for cold sores since there's shark liver oil in it [powerful stuff with healing benefits]. If shark oil is the ingredient [in Prep. H] which shrinks hemorrhoids might shark oil shrink a keloid? Makes sense to me to keep a tube handy for various uses. Shark oil isn't that easily or inexpensively found elsewhere. [Generics like Prep. H. may contain shark oil - I know one does.]

Keloids are an atypical scarring response so if you keloid, to risk surgery would likely result in more keloids. You may find new ways to treat them on WebMD.com - a reliable website which I'll often search. It's up to date on most health related topics.

Can Keloids on the skin be treated to disappear totally ?

Not usually. To have a keloid disappear totally, you have to have it surgically removed. The surgeon cuts around the scar and sews the sides back together. Of course, this can also create a new keloid scar. Some people tend towards keloid formation, and some people don't.

I'd talk to a plastic surgeon if this is something you're interested in. Over the counter remedies like lotions and such just don't work. It's a genetic thing.

Painful keloids??

i have one on my arm and one one my leg. some times they get shooting pains, and if i bang them or scratch them too hard, they send pain %26lt;minor and dull%26gt; down the arm/leg. Any one else?

Painful keloids??
I have a large one on my shoulder from a bicycle accident when I was 14 or so. I have had it surgically removed 2 times. Once when I was 18 and second when I was 28. It is still there. a little larger... but still there. It itches some times. About once a month it will hurt. shooting pain like you say. If I happen to hit it or if some one grabs my shoulder like they are going to give me a back massage..... major pain..... When I get a stable insurance.,... I plan on trying to have it removed with steroid injections.

TO CONTINUE:

my keloid granuloma

My first surgery consisted of a local anesthetic, then the DR sliced down the length of the keloid. It was about the size of my thumb print... say about 3/4 of an inch long and about 1/2 an inch wide. He then removed several of the granulomas inside. it came back...slightly larger.

I opted to try the steroid injections at 25. I was getting out of the navy... had 2 sets of about 8+ recommended. Then I didnt have insurance to continue. I did notice that the keloid started getting smaller shorter... not sticking off my shoulder as much... nor was it as firm

Then I went back in the Navy... I didnt think about it again until I was 28. The DR suggested that it was too big for steroids and wanted to try surgery. So this time I got a local and then the DR abraded it. basically cheese grated it off. It came back slightly larger. Now....it stands off my shoulder about 1/8 of an inch and is about 1 and 1/4 of an inch wide and about 1 inch tall.
Reply:Keloids occur due to overgrowth of fibrous scar tissue and I am sure they can cause pain if you re-injure the area.

You might wish to see your doctor for treatment.

Keloids can be treated with injection of corticosteroid drugs such as cortisone directly into the lesion. These injections cause the keloid to become thinner, and are repeated every three to four weeks until the keloid has been resolved. Other therapies include laser treatment or radiation therapy, and topical treatments, surgery, or a combination of things.

Another surgical option is cryosurgery, in which liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the tissues in the keloid. The treatment may need to be repeated to remove as much of the keloid as possible; however, cryosurgery prevents keloids from recurring. New approaches include silastic gel sheeting, and a new type of tape that has been soaked with steroids, which are released slowly into the keloid, causing it to thin over time.

Keloids on lips?
Awww.... gross! I don't think there is a scar removing product out there gentle enough for our lips. Just learn to live with it (well actually you have, it's been four years right?).

When someone asks where you got your nasty scar say you got it from a fight or something that would make you look like a badass...

Keloids on Nose Piercing?

I felt a bump on the inside of my nostril near the hole. Does it go away. is it normal?

Keloids on Nose Piercing?
Bumps on cartilage are quite normal, especially in cold, dry weather. Just leave it alone and everything will be ohk. As long as it isn't red, really sore, or oozing green fluid, its nothing to worry about.

Does silicone sheeting really help treat keloids?

I've had a keloid since the age of 10 when I got the chicken pox. over the years it has grown and I would like to know if there is a way to shrink it or get it removed. Does anyone know of anything?

Does silicone sheeting really help treat keloids?
There are laser therapys that can help reduce the thickness of the keloid, and sometimes a good plastic surgeon can resect the scar. How sucessful that would be is hard to predict. Keloids formation is the pattern of scar healing some folks have, and you can never predict how the skin will react to an injury. One advantage lasers and even resecting might have to offer is that you could be treating the skin during the healing process to help influence how the final scar will look. Your best bet is to consult with a dermatologist or plastic surgeon and find out exactly what, if anything, they could offer you.

Reply:Yes you can get one on your lip. As with any piercing. It's a mass of scar tissue. I'd go to the Dr. They may want to remove it. Also take the piercing out of you lip.
Reply:I know this won't be much help, but I recently got my nose pierced and within a week I had a knot that kinda looks like an anthill on the inside of my nose. It has since then (it's been about 4 days since the knot appeared) started going down in size.

Home remedies for reducing appearance of keloids? (Very small one)?

Any home remedies for a really small keloid from a piercing?

Home remedies for reducing appearance of keloids? (Very small one)?
If it is a fresh piercing I recommend adequate cleaning of site, drying and application of sorbolene mixed with maxepa, vitamin E and calendula 3 x daily.

Generally they state many alternative therapies, but if cryosurgery is not an option, nothing else will work on an older lesion.
Reply:Try rubbing vitamin E oil with your lotion on it. Anything that will help reduce scarring should work to reduce them. There's some scar reducing ointment on the market.
