I was wondering if there is a genetic reason in the tissue that cause this type of scar (keloids)?

because i know of a few people who have this scar; (only difference is the length, it's shorter) and they have not had any surgery, this scar just appeared at a certain stage in

their lives. Any ideas?

Keloids can be considered to be "scars that don't know when to stop." A keloid, sometimes referred to as a keloid scar, is a tough heaped-up scar that rises quite abruptly above the rest of the skin. It is irregularly shaped and tends to enlarge progressively. Unlike scars, keloids do not subside over time.

What is the difference between a keloid and a hypertrophic scar?

After the skin is injured, the healing process usually leaves a flat scar. Sometimes the scar is hypertrophic, or thickened, but confined to the margin of the wound. Hypertrophic scars often subside by themselves (a process which can take one year or more). Treatment such as injections of cortisone (steroids) can speed this process.

Keloids, by contrast, may start some time after the injury and extend beyond the wound site. This tendency to migrate into surrounding areas that weren't injured to begin with distinguishes keloids from hypertrophic scars. Keloids typically appear following surgery or injury, but they can also appear spontaneously or as a result of some slight inflammation, such as an acne pimple on the chest (even one that wasn't scratched). Other minor injuries that can trigger keloids are burns and piercings.
Reply:I would think that a greater number of africans are affected than the caucians due to their skin type...keloids scars do not occur after surgery alone/or a nasty cut. It can just appear if you are acne prune in certain areas of the skin , especially the stomach.

It can appear as a small boil, then gradually develop into a ugly. unsightly scar that raises up and can grow for a while, so to me I would think it have alot to do with your genetics.
Reply:Just an overgrowth of scar tissue. I can be remedied by laser treatments .It's no big deal.

I am planning on gauging my ears to a 10 ga but i really am afraid of getting keloids, how do i avoid them ?!?

i need help, oh and if i decide to let them grow in will they completely go away ?

Gauge slowly, step up in sizes of plugs slowly to let your ears stretch. There is obviously no way to 100% avoid keloids but they most commonly happen to those who rush the gauging process.
Reply:I agree with adam85719; gauge slowly and you should be fine. Enjoy the gauge that you're at, buy some beautiful jewelry in the size you are or just below to prevent you from doing it too fast

Are you sure they are keloids, or are they just bumps?

Not every little bump is a keloid.

Will leave a link on both, with info on them and how to possibly get rid of them.

I had my 2nd earring piereced almost a year ago & now I am keloids. What's the best way to get rid of them?

I have no insurance and I need the cheapest or the most convenient D-I-Y [do it yourself] way to get rid of them.

What is your race...that is a good thing to know. Those from the Mediterranean countries and those from the black race seem to get these more often. Keloids are an aggressive form of scar formation when the body gets 'injured' (pierced, in your case). Removing them causes more scar tissue, thus bigger keloids. You may go from a pea sized to a cabbage sized. (Not likely, but you get the picture).

Remover them yourself? I hope that you do not entertain that thought becuase of the trouble that you may get yourself into...I am sorry to say, but you need a plastics guy to get you the most cosmetic appealing removal, and they will tell you that there is no guarantee.

No more piercings for you. You will only propigate more keloids.
Reply:the best way is to have a Dr cut them off..

but since you are asking for a do it yourself method... i wouldn't recommend anything.
Reply:How big is the keloids? Are you a guy? Well keloids are hereditary (especially in people of african descent) and can recur again if attempt is made to cut them off. It is an abnormal wound healing process that causes excess scar tissue formation. Most people want surgical intervention for cosmetic reasons. There is hardly a D-I-Y for this without having some kind of precription medication. There is a steriod injection (triamcinalone) which you may not get over the counter. You may consider waiting until you can afford it. It doesn't cost much. If you are able to get it, you ask a doctor friend to inject the site. Nothing major. Is it getting bigger by the day? Are you causing more injury to the site by putting on tight-fitting earings?
Reply:Keloids are nothing to play with, and you should NEVER try to correct this problem by yourself. You are going to need to see a doctor. You cannot remove a keloid yourself. Doing so, will only tramatize the scar and can lead to the scar increasing in size. Also, you cannot leave the keloid just there. You need intervention or it will continue to grow. Doctors, in order to treat keloids, will remove the keloid but also inject your ear with steroids to prevent a reoccurrence. Again, see a doctor. They may allow you to pay in installments. It is worth it. Again, do not try to fix this yourself, you will only complicate the matter and cause more injury to your ear. Dr. SCD

What is the best (and most accesible) treatment for minor earlobe keloids?

Consult a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Talk to him about intralesional steroid injections as well as other options.

What is the best way to get rid of and prevent Keloids?

I am of Asian and Caucasian decent and in the past three years have gotten about 4 colloids. Two of them are on my back in a very visible place and are growing constantly (about 23mm now). What are my options for removal; I don't mind scarring much but these ugly bumps have to go!

What is the best way to get rid of and prevent Keloids?
Unfortunately there is not much that you can do to prevent them. Some people have them because they have keloid bodies whenever they receive scars. Some doctors are able to remove them by burning them off and that procedure can be done in their office in one day. But you have to be careful with that also because you have a keloid body chances are that they could come back. But speak with a dermatologists. Best of luck.
